This is a vintage Customs and Excise Endometer Gauge. An English, cast iron stave measuring tool for taxation purposes, dating to the mid 20th century, circa 1960. Associated with the brewing industry, this gauge was used by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise to adjudicate alcohol duty.
- A fascinating tool, used in period to measure the end stave thickness of a barrel
- Accurate measurement was useful for applying duty to barrels of alcohol
- Displays a desirable aged patina, gently time-worn with official use
- Crafted in cast iron, with a tactile pine handle showing caramel hues
- Extends and closes upon a five hole bracket, secured with by pin on chain
- When closed, the two pins meet, moving apart to aid measurement
- Engraved to the handle with Customs & Excise beneath a crown mark, and the date of 1960
- The reverse with the Dring & Fage of London maker's mark
