A prolific novelist of adult and children's literature, Maria Edgeworth (1768 - 1849) was born in Oxfordshire before moving to Ireland. Her best-known work Castle Rackrent was an Irish Catholic story of familial decline. Other works include the children's stories The Parent's Assistant of 1796 and the story of interracial marriage Belinda (1801). With a keen interest in politics, Edgeworth held views on the Act of Union, early feminist ideals and the equal education for girls.
