This is an antique inscribed Glastonbury chair. An English, oak armchair in Gothic Revival taste, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900.

A superb example of the traditional Glastonbury form, this distinguished chair exhibits the Latin dedication as featured on the 16th century original.

• Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout
• Quality oak presents fine grain interest and warm caramel hues
• Wonderful exposed joints a bold feature of the Glastonbury form, as are the striking X-frame legs
• Defined by the distinctive shaped arms, here accentuated with relief carvings

• Reads; Sit Laus Deo - Iohannes Arthurus - Monacus Glastonie - Salvet Eum Deus - Da Pacem Dñe
• Translated to English, it honours John Arthur Thorne, the treasurer of Glastonbury Abbey
• It broadly reads as; Praise Be to God, John Arthur, Monk of Glastonbury, May God Save Him, Lord, Give Peace

• Ornate medallion to the back rest, with a striking quarterfoil motif to the rear
