This is a vintage ship's bearing plate. An English, mahogany and enamelled maritime compass navigation aid, or desk ornament, dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1930.
- Wonderful example of a vintage maritime aid
- Displays a desirable aged patina
- Presented within a two-piece mahogany box with iron swivel clasps
- Lid marked with stencil type; Patt. 42 Bearing Plate No 56
- Enamelled gimbal allows for readings on rough seas by maintaining its level
- Rotating outer course dial encompassing the 10cm (4") main compass face
- Folding Azimuth plate with sighting line for accurate readings
- Pair of sun-shades with two levels of UV protection fold out from sight
- Brass compass face in good order with quality black markings
- Compass features cardinal and intercardinal directions, north marked with fleur-de-lys motif
- Smaller measurements signify 90 degrees between each cardinal
- Maker's mark for Heath & Co Ltd. New Eltham, London, S.E.9.
