This is a vintage commemorative ashtray. An English, cast iron tray with the official British Empire Exhibition lion emblem by Herrick, dating to the early 20th century, marked as 1924.
The British Empire Exhibition was staged in London between April 1924 and October 1925, the aim to promote technological and commercial opportunities between 56 of the 58 territories within the Empire. Held at a site in Wembley, the event led to the creation of Wembley Stadium, the home of English football.
- Displaying a desirably aged patina with fine weathering commensurate with age
- Relief lion emblem created for the exhibit by Frederick Charles Herrick (1887-1970)
- Cigarette rests to each corner upon the raised tray edges
- Marked to the rear 'British Empire Exhibition, Wembley 1924'
- Unmarked as such, but exudes the craftsmanship of a Coalbrookdale piece
