This is an antique Cromwellian, country, 6 plank chest dating to c.1650 during the period of the English Civil War.
A fine example, vigourously and well carved in English oak, displaying the most wonderful aged patina to the weathered boards. This modest example is constructed in classic six plank form with joints pegged for strength.
The hand carving, typical of the period, displaying geometric stylised scrolls and foliate detail to the front panel only. The sides and back panel are plain with hand chamfering, scribed detail and notching to the lid.
The lid lifts on iron, wire strap hinges offering storage within and a candle box to one end that supports the lid when opened. An iron lock plate is present absent of lock and key.
Superb period charm and in good antique order, this piece is delivered waxed and polished ready for the home.
