This is an antique Suiban planter. A Japanese, decorative bronze bonsai jardiniere, in the manner of Murata Seimin, dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1850. A superb example of Edo period metalwork, with captivating detail and form.
- Fine Japanese craftsmanship in the sought-after Suiban bonsai tradition, ideal for Ikebana or dry landscape arrangements
- Crafted in quality bronze with a pleasing aged patina, adding depth and historic character
- Distinctive hexagonal form, adorned to the fascia with relief cast fish and octopus motifs, redolent of marine themes
- Unusual and charming sea bed scene to the base, presenting a selection of shells in high relief
- Standing upon a set of six short bracket feet, providing visual lift and decorative interest
- In good antique condition, lightly timeworn with desirable surface tonality
