This is a set of English, Staunton style chess pieces dating to c.1880.
In good condition for their age these pieces are lead weighted for stability and retain their original green baize bases.åÊ
Traditionally carved from Ebony and Boxwood and featuring the original french polish, this complete set is of a 'club' size with the king measuring approximately 9cm (3.54").
A snug fit presented in an English oak, twin flap box from the same period with brass furniture and decoration this is a fine set with wonderful patina and tactile charm.
Complete (with one matched bishop, please see photos) and in good order, the board shown is modern for presentation purposes only and is not included.
About Staunton Style:
Designed originally by Nathaniel Cook, Howard Staunton was widely regarded as the strongest chess player in the middle of the 19th century and promoted this distinctive, eponymous style and now, as set out in the rules of chess, this style is to be used for all competitions.
