This is an antique ladies writing desk. A French, walnut decorative bonheur du jour, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900. 

• Beautiful craftsmanship with superb colour and form
• Displaying a desirable aged patina and in very good order
• Select walnut stocks present exquisite golden caramel hues
• Striking grain interest evident throughout the frame and openings

• Sarcophagus top sits prominently above the serpentine front
• Multiple surfaces displaying exceptional marquetry with animal and foliate decor
• Lifting upwards, the arched lid dressed with an ormolu lock escutcheon — key present
• Opening to reveal an extending writing surface and a trio of small drawers over a faux fascia

• Surface replete with an inset leather writing skiver in a deep forest green hue
• Sash aprons to each side and the front, hosting a trio of shaped drawers
• Front knees accentuated with eye-catching ormolu mounts, displaying gilt tones
• Standing upon a quartet of slender, elongate cabriole legs

Observed by our in-house restorers during the professional clean the desk received, a wonderful discovery was made within the frame - a personal note left in 1905; ordinarily hidden within this fine piece, and potentially discovered for the first time since it was written nearly 120 years ago. A fascinating find, captured here for posterity.
