This is an antique George & the Dragon display plaque. An English, gilt metal and beech framed decorative relief, dating to the Regency period and later, circa 1820.
As one of the world's most venerated saints, St George of Lydda - today, South East of Tel Aviv in Israel - is best known for his dragon slaying feat upon horseback. George is the patron saint of many locations and organisations including England, Ukraine, Moscow and Catalonia. The legend of the dragon dates to the 11th century.
