This is an antique decorative ammonite on plinth. An English, fossilised geological ornamental nautilus fossil, dating to the late Victorian period and earlier.
Ammonites evolved in the ocean between 240,000,000 - 65,000,000 years ago and faced extinction alongside the dinosaurs. Ammonite comes from the Greek god Ammon, and was an ancient relative of modern cephalopods such as squid, nautilus and cuttlefish.
