Winstanley of Wigan
Winstanley of Wigan
William Winstanley of 46 Standishgate, Wigan operated as a clockmaker in the late 19th century. Clockmaking had been a long-standing tradition in Wigan, with a father and son by the name of Winstanley operating on the Wallgate in the 1820s along with several others. At the time of the 1881 Worrall’s Wigan and District directory, Winstanley is one of a handful listed as clockmakers; Standishgate was also the location for fellow clockmaker Samuel Royle, at number 56.
