Thomas Walker & Son, Birmingham
Thomas Walker the elder began trading in the mid-19th century with his son Thomas Ferdinand as T. Walker and Co. from 58 Oxford Street in Birmingham.
In 1861, the pair patented their first Walker Ship Log, alongside which they also made items such as boilers and water gauges. Thomas Walker died in 1871, which heralded a change of name to T. Walker and Sons.
The remaining years of the 19th century saw the business create harpoon logs and self-feeding stoves amongst other items. In the early 20th century, Thomas Ferdinand and his own son, Thomas Sydney, moved into a new premises called the Walker Building, also on Oxford Street. From this location came the patented electrical ship’s log, which were branded as Thos. Walker & Son, Birmingham.
