George Betjemann and Sons

George Betjemann and Sons

George Betjemann and Sons

A prolific patent holder, George Betjemann and his sons George-William and John operated in premises on Pentonville Road, London in the mid-19th century. Trading as George Betjemann and Sons, their patents included an intricate, automatically opening and closing mechanism for luxurious jewellery boxes favoured by Aspreys and Leuchars et al. Further patents were granted, including those for equipoise candlesticks within carry cases, combined liqueur and cigar cases and the self-closing book slide.
Betjemann senior began his trade as an apprentice cabinet maker for other marques, moving into his own business once his sons had plied their own trade. Their work appeared at the International Exhibition of 1862 and the International Exposition in Paris, After a long period of the sons and grandsons continuing to trade using the Betjemann name for offshoots and merged companies, the future poet Sir John Betjemann had no interest in continuing his great grandfather’s legacy and the business was finally dissolved in 1939.
