Antique Architect's Folio, Design For a Theatre, English, George Wyatt, Georgian

Antique Architect's Folio, Design For a Theatre, English, George Wyatt, Georgian

Data Sheet

Our Stock # 18.9534

This is an antique architect's folio book 'Design for a Theatre.' An English, illustrated binder of etchings and schematics by George Wyatt, published by J. Taylor and W. Miller in London, this edition dated 1812.

A fascinating record of designs to establish a new theatre, authored by a George Wyatt (Dates Unknown) after architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt (1775 - 1852; seemingly no relation) won the contract to replace the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane, lost to fire in 1809. Intrigue abounds as the publication of this folio in 1812 lead to claims of plagiarism against Benjamin Wyatt, although there is record of earlier designs signed by himself. Whether this folio is a work of infamy or that of a rival bidder, it is of wonderful detail. George Wyatt is recorded to be active in the 1809-1812 period, with work on Howick Hall, Northumberland.

  • In delicate, time worn condition with loose pages and some discolouration
  • The cover shows wear to the coloured marble paper on board
  • Fine etching plates illustrate the folio throughout
  • Comprehensive schematics for the theatre itself and details such as railings and lamps
  • Not implied as provenance, the inside cover with a label for John Betjeman (1906 - 1984) and architect James P. Holden (1806 - 1890)

This is a fascinating antique architect's folio book, The Design for a Theatre being both intriguing and of historic record. In delicate order, but fully legible. Delivered ready to enjoy.
